Battery Options - The unit is powered by alkaline batteries or an optional rechargeable battery pack (YSI Part # 6118) with fast charge feature.
Optional Barometer - Internal barometer can be user-calibrated and displayed along with other data, used in dissolved oxygen calibrations, and logged to memory for tracking changes in barometric pressure.
Carrying Case - The instrument comes standard with
a soft-sided carrying case with enough space for the

Measurements are fast and easy with one-hand operation, an easy-to-use backlit display, automatic push-button calibration, and a weighted, quick-sinking probe. The YSI 550A DO has a built-in calibration chamber, low-battery indicator, direct salinity, and altitude compensation. The instrument provides simultaneous readings of oxygen and temperature. Dissolved oxygen readings are automatically compensated for temperature.

Other features include automatic calibration, automatic temperature compensation, selectable EC/TDS conversion factor, adjustable conductivity temperature coefficient, stability indicator, Battery Error Prevention System and battery strength percentage guage. All functions are accomplished with only two buttons. When the instrument is turned on, % battery power remaining is displayed preventing unexpected battery failures in the field. Calibration is quick and simple at one or two points and the user can select between the instruments’ memorized NIST or standard pH buffers. Conductivity and TDS calibration is also automatic with five programmed values to choose from. Depending on the application, the user can select the conversion factor between conductivity and TDS, as well as the temperature coefficient factor. All calibration and user settings are saved even during battery replacement. The HI 1288 multiparameter probe compliments the meters’ outstanding features: the pH sensor utilizes gel electrolyte and a cloth junction for longer life, faster response and greater durability. The conductivity/TDS sensor is composed of graphite. This new technology eliminates oxidation and polarization errors which are the main causes for erroneous readings and frequent calibration. Conductance and temperature are measured in the tester's uniquely designed integral cup. The conductivity multiple ranges selectors switch improves the resolution of the readings. The pH measurement is obtained from the external electrode which is easily calibrated with the optionally provided buffer solutions of 4, 7 and 10 pH.

The Digital Tester has three useful measurements (conductivity, temperature, and pH) that help determine the cost effectiveness of the recirculating water treatment systems. Applications include the quick determination of dissolved solids and pH in cooling tower and boiler water systems, the detection of carry-over in steam condesate lines and the monitoring of ground water systems.
